The story of a home in Logan, Utah being sold by Doc and Carolyn Christensen began eight years ago, After spending thirty years in Salem, Oregon, Doc and I decided to pull up stakes and join our children and at the time two grandchildren . The thought of all our kids and grandkids being there and Don and I sitting alone in Salem caused me extreme loneliness. Doc was able to relocate his jewelry business and after seeing lots of homes, we chose a pretty 100 year old home that we had lots of remodeling plans for. The years went by and eventually we had eight grandchildren and today there is one more on the way ! I worked for one year as an aide for the school district there and then I believe I was guided to Sunshine Terrace where Cindy Jones and Leanne Loscher took a chance on me and let me be a social work assistant. After dusting off the cobwebs of my social work degree, I studied, took some classes and in one years time had taken the Utah licensure exam and I passed ! Hooray, I was a real social worker or at least I tried to convince myself and others.. I believe my life experience of being comfortable with the elderly and taking care of my mother Bettylu Reynar who had Alzheimer's disease helped prepare me.. It has been the highlight of all my jobs in my career and I grew to love the staff and residents there very much.
We loved our Logan home and with Don's creative genius, he built a garage fences , an art studio, and remodeled our family room, kitchen , and even built a second bathroom upstairs. We had many fun family visits with our kids and grandkids, and even held Sunday morning choir in our parlor for our Logan 3rd Ward.. Our neighbors Roberta and Sue Morgan became like family to us and Don was always their handy man. Sue would always reward him with luscious treats, homemade sweet ginger pickles, or homemade breads ! Roberta became “Grandma” to me and I loved being in her presence daily.
Another aspect of our Logan life was Don’s exposure as an artist of regard. This was made possible by the help and friendship of Gene Needham who is a respected highly successful citizen . He and Don met at Gene’s then art supply store and became unlikely painting partners. Over the years , Don created more paintings that have gained much attention while he was still busy as a master wax carver in his little shop in our back yard.
So, the cold winters came and went and pretty hot summers with our garden, bike and canoe rides, and frequent trips to see our kids in Orem and Taylorsville. Then in 2012’ life took many of us down a different path. We had a wonderful family Christmas in Logan and had a beautiful picture taken of us all even though our little Gemma was still in Mommy Katie’s tummy ! The next week, I started having terrible back pains amidst the fact that Lindsay and Mike and family made a painful decision for all of them to move to Texas where Mike could have a turn being closer to many family members.. That was so hard to have the six of them leave us all. However I was fighting daily pain and starting a long road of x rays , PT, back braces and many medical appts. The pain was intermittent and we found out I have osteoporosis and multiple compression fractures. So in September of 2012’, I went to McKay Dee Hospital in Ogden and had a procedure done called a Kyphoplasty which injected cement into two of my discs to help keep my spine from becoming hunched over. It is a story which has been told now many times and I ended up in the ER in October of that year and had intense jolting pains in my right chest and shoulder area. To make a very long story short, pain medication helped and in December of 2012’ a Ogden radiologist discovered that a sliver of cement had gone into the right ventricle of my heart and one piece was floating outside the heart in the pericardium. There are also some small pieces in my lungs. Everyone was shocked and three cardiac surgeons in Ogden and Salt Lake had never seen such an occurrence. They thought it would do more damage to try and remove them then to let them settle and encapsulate into the heart wall. The one sliver in the heart has done that but the little sliver in the pericardium is still floating and causing me pain on a daily basis. I have been advised to get cat skans twice yearly for awhile more.
Because of the fact that it changed my life’s perceptions and I still have my back struggles, work and keeping up our home became a big challenge. With prayer and faith, Doc and I decided it would be best to sell our home and have me take a early retirement. Sometimes when one faces a life challenge, you just have to proceed with faith that the answers will come.
Soo, we also had a pipe burst in out upstairs bathroom at about that time and we had fans going, walls torn down and carpet and flooring replaced. Then came the kitchen with our oven and frig in the dining room for about two months. In May, Don had all the projects on the house done and we listed it with a local realtor . Within five short days, a young couple came through and made us an offer that shocked us ! They wanted a thirty day closing and Don had all his projects still not done. However, we accepted their offer and the story brings us to now. I tearfully gave my resignation letter to Leanne and Cindy at work and a whirlwind of garage sales, selling furniture, and lots of help from our sweet ward ladies ensued.
Doc managed a miracle and on July 9th, a lovely retirement party was held for me at Sunshine Terrace complete with music, gifts and many tears.. At 3:00 pm, I left the building with Leanne Loscher my supervisor and beloved friend being the last person I hugged tearfully. Doc was waiting as I stepped into our truck with our RV behind and we started out for our adventure to live for one year in our RV and being with our children for awhile. We drove to North Salt Lake and entered Pony Express RV Resort and here we have been for over three weeks. In less then one week we will drop by Logan to pick up Doc’s tools for helping Adam and Katie with their new home in Seattle and there we will be till November. Then we plan on going to Merced. CA to be with Don’s parents for Thanksgiving. Then, we will go south to Texas to be with the Jenkins family for the winter minus the snow..
Soooo, the Logan Home SOLD and the adventure begins It will be fine as long as we can be together . That makes it all worthwhile…
